Nebraska License Plates

Nebraska presently issues most plates in pairs and annual renewal date stickers are still being used in 2026. By the start of Nebraska’s next license plate cycle in 2029, the state could only issue drivers a rear-facing license plate and allow multiyear registrations. These changes were passed in 2025 by Legislative Bill 97.

Apportioned plates are issued to Nebraska trucks or buses operating in more than one jurisdiction as part of the International Registration Plan (IRP). Found in flat black on white six-digit regular (2019 high 209312) or Werner (2017 high W24553) versions.

Passenger plates follow a numerical prefix county allocation system except for counties 1, 2 and 59 which use a 3-alpha/3-numeric system. Andy DeCeunynck advised that county level plates -- outside of 1,2 and 59 -- did not use the letters I, M, O, Q, W or X. Around 2021-2022, Nebraska started using M and W on county coded plates with X reserved for trailers.
