Illinois low-speed vehicle license plates![]()
May 1, 2010 — Distinctive license plates are now required on low-speed vehicles in Illinois.
The new law took effect January 1, 2010, and imposes a registration fee of $19.
Low-speed vehicles may now be driven on roads with speed limits of 30 miles per hour or less, anywhere in the state, unless prohibited by municipal ordinances.
Low-speed vehicles are defined as four-wheeled motor vehicles, with engine displacement under 1200cc, which are capable of more than 20 but not more than 25 m.p.h.
