Flat plates have come to South Carolina. A press release from the South Carolina DMV dated 2007-09-18 reported that the standard issue "Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places" graphic is the first to change to a flat, digitally produced format in September. Starting in October, Personalized, Permanent Trailer, Amateur Radio, Disabled Veteran, and Dealer plates will change to flat. The new flat general issue "palmetto sunrise" plate began to appear in June and July 2008.

New 2008 Sunrise HVU 376 NEW New plates became available in July, but they began being issued in June to people renewing July expirations. These plates are flat.
The letters I and Q are now being used.

Numbers 101 to 999 are now used. Several optional letter series on the standard base are available on a first-come, first-served basis. These would appear to be out of sequence since they are way beyond the current regular high. These optional series are: TAG (as in car tag), TGR (for fans of Clemson Univ. Tigers), USC (for fans of Univ. of S.Car.), UNC (for fans of Univ. of N. Car.), and UGA (for fans of the Univ. of Ga.). Unlike regular pass. series which only go to 900, these series are numbered through 999. Also, this is the only use of the letter U on South Carolina plates, until recently when regular pass plates began using U. Dealer X202762 New series is X000000 on flat black on light green base. Previous series was XX00000 on embossed blue on white base. All current Dealer plates begin with X2 because the 2 denotes the expiration year 2012. The first digit after the X denotes the last digit of the expiration year.

Farm 17145FM Lower numbers are now appearing. This series is believed to have started in 1983 at FM 10001 with annual issues through 1988, then stickers from 1989 on. It appears that after reaching FM99999, the series started over at either FM1 or FM1001.
FM4918 is the first flat reported.

Permanent Trailer PV74495 After exceeding PT99999, the series continued in PV. Ben Bunton reports seeing PV10001, which could be the first in the PV series. Changed from embossed to flat between PV36000 and PV39000.
Permanent Trailer originally debuted in mid 80s as TP10001 to about TP 25000, then started at PT00000. When the law changed in 1997 or 98, TP Prefix was for fleets of 7 or more trailers, but no limit is required any more. 		Alpca 8615
